Proportional reasoning means understanding and working with relationships between quantities. Instead of looking at single numbers in isolation, students compare how two values grow, shrink, or change in relation to one another.

For example: if 2 apples cost $1, then 4 apples cost $2. Recognizing this relationship helps children scale numbers up or down and make accurate predictions.

In Grade 4, proportional reasoning builds on the solid foundation of addition, subtraction, and multiplication. Students use these skills to solve problems that involve doubling, halving, ratios, and scaling.
