The topic Adding and Subtracting Hundreds introduces Grade 4 students to calculations with four-digit numbers (4.d.n.). At this level, children expand their understanding of place value and learn how adding or subtracting hundreds affects the thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones places. They discover that when hundreds are added or taken away, the digits in the hundreds place change while the other places stay the same — unless regrouping or borrowing is needed.
