The topic Addition introduces Grade 4 students to adding five-digit numbers (5.d.n.) with and without regrouping. At this level, children build on their knowledge of place value to understand how each digit contributes to the total sum. They learn to align numbers correctly by place value — ten-thousands, thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones — and to add systematically from right to left. Visual models and base-ten representations support understanding of regrouping, showing how values “carry over” to the next column when necessary.

Through a combination of written, mental, and real-world problems, students develop accuracy, logical thinking, and number fluency. They explore different strategies, such as breaking numbers apart, using number lines, and estimating results to check for reasonableness.
