The core problems of the basic times tables are the foundational calculations in each row: multiplying by 1, 2, 5, and 10. Simply put, these are the 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s rows. Children grasp these problems quickly, and by mastering these core problems, they can better understand and calculate the entire times tables. These simpler problems can be used as a stepping stone to solve more challenging ones.
For example: 8 × 6 = ( 5 × 8 ) + ( 1 × 8 ).

While these core problems help, the times tables must still be memorized to ensure that later written multiplication and division tasks can be completed within a reasonable timeframe.

The problems 1 × 1, 2 × 2, 3 × 3, and so on up to 10×10 are square problems. These also belong to the set of tasks that make solving times table problems easier for children.
