When solving math problems, sometimes more than one operation appears in the same exercise. For example:

5 + 3 – 2

To find the correct answer, children must learn in which order to solve the steps. The order of operations is the rule that tells us how to calculate correctly when problems combine addition and subtraction.

In Grade 2, the focus is on practicing small number ranges, while switching flexibly between addition and subtraction. By learning this process early, children avoid mistakes, build confidence, and prepare for later grades when multiplication and division are added.
