Why Do We Use the Mathematical Symbols for Greater Than, Less Than, or Equal To?

The greater-than (>) and less-than (<) symbols are used in basic math to compare two numbers. The equal sign (=) is used when both numbers have the same value. These symbols help children describe and understand numerical relationships clearly.

If these exercises are challenging, a number line can be a useful tool. On a number line, it becomes clear which numbers are greater or smaller: smaller numbers are always to the left of larger numbers.
