What Are Geometric Solids?

Geometric solids are three-dimensional objects that occupy space. They can be described by their surfaces: the number of faces, edges, and vertices they have. In Grade 1 and Grade 2, students begin learning the correct names for geometric shapes and solids while also exploring their properties.

At this stage, the focus is on observing and examining solids carefully. Children are encouraged to ask and answer questions such as: How many vertices does a rectangular prism have? How many faces does a cube have? How many edges does a pyramid have? These explorations help build a solid foundation for understanding geometry in later grades.
